On Friday, the New York State Department of Health released its long-awaited study on staffing in hospitals and nursing homes. This was in response to a 2019-2020 budget provision in which Governor Cuomo commissioned the department to study how staffing enhancements and other initiatives could be used to improve patient safety and the quality of healthcare service delivery in hospitals and nursing homes.  The move was in consideration of current legislation entitled "Safe Staffing for Quality Care," sponsored by Assemblywoman Aileen Gunther and Senator Gustavo Rivera (A.2954/S.1032). The bill calls for mandated nurse staffing ratios in hospital and nursing homes, which NYONEL remains opposed to as a "one-size-fits-all" governmental solution to a much more complicated clinical/patient safety issue.

NYONEL's response to the study report, which includes a link to the report, is attached. It is being sent to the Governor, the bill sponsors and other key legislative members.
