The 2021-2024 NYONEL Strategic Plan goals include increasing NYONEL visibility and the voice of our members in a variety of settings. This week your leaders were hard at work on this objective!
On Tuesday, November 30, the Assembly Higher Education Committee held a public hearing to examine the effects of COVID-19 on higher education in New York State. NYONEL Executive Director, Ann Harrington provided testimony at that hearing.
Committee Chair Debra Glick expressed interest in hearing not only about pandemic effects on instruction and enrollment and lessons learned, but also ideas for providing better services to students, and suggestions for meeting financial aid and mental health service needs. Harrington provided a 5-minute summary of this testimony (also attached) on behalf of NYONEL members, answering questions from the committee, and offering to collaborate as needed to help develop the ideas discussed.
On Wednesday, December 1, Nicolette Fiore-Lopez, NYONEL President, and E. Kate Valcin, President-Elect, were guests of NYONEL member Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, FAAN, Producer and Moderator, on her bi-weekly radio show, HealthCetera in the Catskills, WIOX Radio at wioxradio.org. They were invited to discuss Governor Hochul’s declaration of a statewide disaster emergency, and suspension of certain regulations and laws for 30 days through executive orders.
Nikki and Kate provided information to the listening audience on the pandemic state-of-the-state in New York hospitals. Topics included how the emergency measures would enhance our ability to care for all hospitalized patients, regardless of their diagnosis and their location in the state. Presently some upstate counties are experiencing a surge of COVID patients even ahead of what is anticipated with the arrival of the Omicron variant. It is important to convey to the public that the emergency orders were issued to enhance our capability to care for the residents of New York State, and that elective surgeries and procedures will be curtailed only when certain thresholds are met, as determined through the ongoing hospital reporting that has been taking place throughout the pandemic.
NYONEL will continue to advocate for the health of New York citizens and for our members. If you identify a forum where you think we can communicate on members’ behalf please contact us: https://nyonel.nursingnetwork.com/contact
