In 2022 the NYONL Research Committee conducted a self care study of NYONL member nurse leaders. Today, that study was published in the August issue of AONL's Nurse Leader journal! Kudos to the NYONL member authors: Linda Millenbach, PhD, RN; Mary Carey, PhD, RN, FAHA, FAAN; Cathy DeChance, PhD, RN; Lillian Diaz, DHA, RN, NEA-BC; Paula Graham, DNP, RN; Jeanmarie Moorehead, EdD, RN, NEA-BC, Kathleen Sellers, PhD, RN and Mary Zajc, DNP, RN, WHNP-BC, NEA-BC!
Today's AONL press release noted:
Older nurse leaders tend to take work breaks and vacation, according to a study published in the August issue of Nurse Leader. They also were more likely to engage in spiritual practices and acknowledge success at work. The information is consistent with previous research finding nurses with less experience had greater levels of stress and burnout. The prospective, cross-sectional, descriptive study surveyed members of the New York Organization for Nursing Leadership [sic] on their self-care practices; 92 of the organization’s 533 members responded. The authors call for nurse leaders to prioritize and promote self-care practices across the profession and to conduct further research with larger sample sizes to determine self-care best practices and motivating factors for nurse leaders.
NYONL leadership commends the committee on your meaningful work and we look forward to the steps that follow, in order to continually improve nurse leader self care. The full article is attached.
